Microwave technology has been used in the field of medicine for more than 40 years. In recent years, as microwaves have become more and more widely used in clinical practice, especially in the elimination of various inflammatory diseases and tissue coagulation, they have shown unique efficacy, which has increasingly led medical practitioners to explore and study microwaves, especially in the application of cancer research.

We know that microwave technology has a significant feature is the thermal effect of microwaves, and it is this significant advantage of the microwave thermal effect that is gradually making its presence felt in the treatment of cancer.

Wattsine microwave source from the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released the latest data on the global cancer burden in 2020 shows that: at present, the incidence and mortality rate of lung cancer in the world, the top three cancers, the global annual incidence of about 2.5 million cases, more than 1.6 million people die of lung cancer each year.

In China, the incidence of lung cancer is even more serious, topping all cancers, with data showing that in 2020, there were 815563 new cases of lung cancer and 714699 deaths in China. It is expected that by 2025, the number of lung cancer patients in China will reach one million, making it the world's number one lung cancer country.

For early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), surgical resection is the main means of cure, but for various reasons, about 80% of lung cancers cannot be treated by surgical resection. For the majority of lung cancer patients who cannot be surgically resected there is limited benefit from conventional radiotherapy. Therefore, in the last decade, scholars at home and abroad have been developing research on heating to treat cancer, and through basic experiments, it has been found that high temperatures (41.5°C) can kill cancer cells. Due to the characteristics of microwave heating, and the heating energy can be controlled, many units at home and abroad have carried out research on microwave treatment of cancer, and achieved certain results, and now microwave treatment of cancer has been applied in clinical practice.

Through clinical research, microwave technology for cancer treatment (tumor microwave therapy) has its unique advantages, the use of microwave thermal effect, selective tumor formation of high temperature tumor treatment methods. The microwave needle is inserted into the tumour under ultrasound guidance to produce an ellipsoidal coagulation zone, resulting in irreversible necrosis of cells and achieving therapeutic goals. The treatment is usually carried out in a single insertion or by zoned coverage (different microwave frequencies can be selected to control the heating depth. The entire tumour can be coagulated in one treatment (by selecting different radiators for different areas of heating).

Patients with advanced cancer, pain and dysfunction are the main manifestations, and surgery is not an acceptable option for patients and their families at this time. However, the application of microwave technology to treat cancer can, on the one hand, alleviate the patient's dysfunction, such as lung cancer patients through microwave therapy to improve ventilation; on the other hand, microwaves can act directly on the nervous system to destroy the transmission of nerve impulses, to achieve the purpose of pain relief, thus improving the quality of life of terminal patients, so that they do not feel the pain.

Although the principle of microwave therapy is complex, the results of domestic and international research show that microwave therapy is mainly through the thermal and biological effects to achieve the disease. Due to the existence of magnetic resistance between polar molecules on the oscillation of the damping effect, thus consuming microwave energy and heat, the use of these heat to achieve the purpose of treatment, which is the thermal effect of microwave therapy. As can be seen, the key point of microwave therapy is the generation of microwave energy, microwave energy equipment also determines the effectiveness of microwave therapy, microwave energy is transmitted from the microwave generator through the shaft cable to the microwave radiator, the radiator can be connected according to the needs of physical therapy and treatment type.

At present, microwave generators are commonly used in the market, such as magnetron and solid state microwave sources. In the past, magnetrons were the mainstream microwave generators and were widely used, but in recent years, with the development of technology, solid-state microwave sources have gradually replaced magnetrons in the medical industry.

What are the specific advantages of solid state microwave source technology over magnetrons?

Highly controllable ---- Real-time feedback and adjustment of frequency, phase, power (forward/reverse), etc. during equipment operation.

Reliable and efficient ---- tens of times longer service life; extremely high output power stability; minimal power degradation after long-term operation.

Safety of use ---- significantly reduced operating voltage requirements to less than 50V DC and simple power supply systems.

Design flexibility ---- higher integration and easier miniaturisation of the package; modular design for easy expansion/replacement.
